The Hawks Collegiate League side started their new campaign with a comprehensive 4 - 0 win over Pulteney Old Scholars in Round 1 of the Division 2 competition. After winning division three last year the side has recruited strongly with the addition of Jake Pollard, Jayden Miller and TJ Scargill from the clubs State League set up and the addition of Paul Sutcliffe in the defensive line up. Key players Jack Foster and Chris Taff Mellor have also returned from long injury lay offs.
The pre season campaign was a busy one with wins against Division One side Westminster, Adelaide Uni Black, Sturt Lions and Flinders Uni and a draw against Div one side Adelaide Thunder.
In blustery conditions at Pulteney's ground. The Hawks defence of Chris Zehle, Jarrod Kerr, Paul Sutcliffe and Peter Atkinson and Goalkeeper Declan Bucco stood firm with timely intercepts and clever positioning. Bucco pulled of some outstanding saves in crucial times in the match.
The Hawks midfield of skipper Hamish Vickers, Liam Bucco and Taff Mellor created several chances for the forward line of TJ Scargill, Jayden Miller and Jake Pollard. Mellor scored on the 20 min mark with a great angled finish from a Pollard assist to calm the nerves. The Hawks peppered the Pulteney goal and were rewarded with a 2nd goal on the 31 min mark when Jayden Miller drove the ball inside the left hand upright after another assist from Pollard.
The half time focus was on more accurate finishing and Pollard responded with a goal of his own two minutes into the second half after getting on the end of a cross shot from Mellor. Pollard rounded off the scoring on the 82 min mark after a clever flick on from sub Scott Ayris. It was great to see all the subs in Ayris, Brad Seidel and Ryan Douglas all make a significant impact when they came on. After a satisfying start to the season the CSL teams now turn their attention to their first home fixture when they take on Mercedes College at the Hawks Nest next Sat.
