HAWKS KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING !
The Adelaide Hills Hawks continued on their winning ways with a hard fought 2-1 win over Adelaide Victory in last Saturday’s State League 1 encounter. The Hills side travelled to Blair Athol knowing that Victory would be a tough opponent on their home soil. After their win over top side Sturt the week before the hawks were almost back to full strength apart from skipper Jake Loechel. Testament to this was a quality substitutes bench that boasted established senior players Daniel Hosking, Sam Bowman, Nick Walker, Callum Hutchins and Dan Ryles which exemplified the depth of the squad at present.
The Hawks got off to a flier when Jimmy Lenzi scored with a well crafted free kick from 25 metres out that eluded everyone and curled inside the right hand post of Victory’s goal. This gave the visitors a massive confidence boost as the started to combine in the midfield with positive passing patterns. 30 minutes later the Hawks doubled their lead when Kyle Markham powered a header across the keeper and into the top corner from a set piece. For the remainder of the half the visitors were in control of the game limiting the home side to sporadic counter attacks.
A buoyant Hawks team entered the break full of confidence but the home side had other ideas as they took the game to the hawks in the second half pinning them back into their half with a glut of possession. 10 minutes into the half, Victory scored when Cash was given too much time and space and he rifled in a shot inside Connor Hudson’s right hand post from 20 metres out. The heat was starting to get to some of the Hawks players as they defended desperately to maintain their lead. Discipline was the key for the remainder of the half and when the final whistle sounded the Hawks came away with an important win that helped them jump into the top six with three rounds remaining.
Best in a disciplined effort were Hudson, Smith, Farquhar and Elliott. The Hawks now face 5th placed Playford at Woodside on Saturday night knowing that they need to keep the momentum going if they are going to play finals this season.
